The TCF IRN (Intégration Résidence et Nationalité, “Residency Nationality Integration”) is a variant of the TCF designed for non-French speakers who are undertaking certain administrative procedures: the TCF IRN intervenes in the context of a naturalization procedure, or an application for a long-term resident card.
The TCF IRN also allows the validation of an A1 level as part of the OFII citizenship course. Indeed, like the other TCFs, the TCF IRN positions all candidates on a level scale ranging from A1 to C2, in accordance with the CEFR.
The TCF IRN is made up of 4 compulsory tests assessing general French language skills:
- Oral comprehension: Collective test: 20 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
- Written comprehension: Collective test: 20 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
- Written expression: Collective test: 3 exercises
- Oral expression: Individual face-to-face test with an examiner: 3 exercises
The TCF IRN exclusively assesses language skills and does not concern knowledge of French history, culture and society.
The TCF IRN has a total duration of 1 hour 15 minutes:
- Oral comprehension: 15 minutes;
- Written comprehension: 20 minutes;
- Written expression: 30 minutes;
- Oral expression: 10 minutes.
Many non-French-speaking candidates choose each year to take the TCF IRN with Cours de Civilisation Française de La Sorbonne : since this test concerns crucial and complex administrative procedure, it is often better for many international candidates to take the TCF IRN within a recognized institution. As an approved exam center, the CCFS supports non-French speakers in passing the TCF IRN and promotes the acceleration of visa and naturalization procedures.
