Just like all modern institutions, Les Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne has developed from the base created by its founders. The base and the trunk are the Cours de Civilisation Française itself. The branches are the various FFL course activities that have naturally been added and have become increasingly important. Branches cannot exist without the tree. It is also important to adapt the contents of the courses proposed by the Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne, its diplomas, its teaching methods and its cultural activities to the evolution of the 21st century.

The Cours de Civilisation Française, the heir of a long tradition , is associated with the symbolic image of the Sorbonne. The mission of its Directory is to maintain this tradition and deploy all his efforts so that this institution remains worthy of this patronage in its spirit, quality and vocation. Our greatest joy is to see more than half of our students who have finished their session reregistering for a new cycle.

The name of the institution itself, Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne, is an indication of this spirit. Entrusting mainly university teaching staff with the mission of train foreign students in French language (whatever their age, origin and professional project) along with the study of the main aspects of French Civilisation from its origins to the present day. A natural movement leads us to attach increasing importance to contemporary France.

The Pre-university section, as its name indicates, does not belong to the University, but it prepares for University studies. Students are selected upon arrival and attend courses designed to improve their knowledge of the French language and French civilisation. They must undertake personal work during these studies.

The entire Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne centre, which is a French as a Foreign Language school with private status. Practical classes and phonetics lessons allow foreign students to learn the basics of the French language or to improve their French. Course levels at the institution are classified in accordance with the European reference framework (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2).

Additional courses are available (written expression, spoken expression) ; special preparation for the DELF (diploma in French language studies) and the DALF (diploma in advanced French language studies), special preparation for the advanced-level TCF (French knowledge test), available separately or combined with: the DAP (Preliminary Admission Application). An introduction to Business French allows interested students to sit the exams available at the Paris Chamber of Commerce.

And to crown it all, French Civilisation lectures (including those of the ‘Sorbonne dans la Ville’) are open to students of all levels. Advanced-level lectures are given by very famous university lecturers. Intermediate-level and elementary-level lectures require the contributions of suitably trained teachers and, in particular, FFL teaching method specialists. A cycle specially designed for beginners is available.

Unless exception, none of the courses are taught in the Sorbonne itself, but instead in buildings near the Sorbonne.
